Jeanie Poling, a longtime presence in San Francisco’s country and bluegrass community, has died at the age of 67.
Poling died on Aug. 26 from pneumonia, according to her husband, musician Chuck Poling. His statement came after she had spent about three and a half years battling two rare forms of cancer.
For more than 40 years, Jeanie and Chuck Poling performed together as musicians and partners. Their work made them familiar figures in San Francisco’s bluegrass scene, where Jeanie was remembered as a central and influential presence.
The couple also hosted the Bluegrass Country Jam at the Plough and Stars for more than two decades. The event ended after the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted live performances and community gatherings.
In a Facebook tribute, Chuck Poling described his wife as a gifted singer, devoted mother and accomplished professional. He also reflected on their decades-long relationship and thanked friends and supporters who had assisted the family during her illness and after her death.
Friends and fans also shared tributes online. Cheryl Altman remembered Poling as someone whose warmth and personality left a lasting impression, describing how friends tried to lift her spirits during chemotherapy.
Poling is survived by her husband, Chuck, and their children, Isabel and Reuben. Family members have asked for time together as they grieve her loss.
